Description

Neem oil is also an effective soil soak to combat fungus gnat larvae. Dilute the oil with water per the manufacturer’s directions and directly drench the soil at the roots of the plant. You can also spray the upper portion of the plant to keep adult gnats at bay. Alternatively, consider purchasing our new 'A Gardener's Guide To Biological Control' book, written by Dragonfli founder, and expert, Julian Ives. The book is available here.

The parasitoids are usually specific to certain prey species and will not become a nuisance or cause harm to non-target creatures Pesticide control The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner.Sciarid fly (also known as compost fly) or Fungus Gnats are a common pest of greenhouse plants in the spring. You can create your own gnat trap simply with a bowl of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of washing-up liquid. The vinegar attracts the gnats, whilst the washing-up liquid makes it hard for them to leave.

Pyrethrin sprays are also effective against fungus gnats and their larvae. To use pyrethrins, lightly mist all plant surfaces and the top of the soil. You don’t want the plants dripping wet, a thin mist will be enough. If there are fungus gnat larvae in the soil, spray the soil directly where adults typically rest to thoroughly moisten the top, then avoid overwatering. Let the soil dry to at least a 2″ depth. Reapply these in three to four weeks until the problem has subsided and the insects are gone.Once all the vine weevil are dead, the nematodes have nothing to reproduce inside of and also die out.

In the second bioassay with P. columbinus, significantly fewer adults emerged from straw treated with Bti compared to the S. feltiae treatment and water control ( Figure 3B: F 2, 27 = 7.66; p = 0.002). A significant difference was not detected in the number of adults that emerged from straw treated with S. feltiae compared to the water control. The Bti treatment resulted in a 57% reduction in adult emergence compared to the water control versus 27% for S. feltiae. Hydrogen peroxide soil drenches, neem oil, pyrethrin, beneficial nematodes, Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis Seedlings and cuttings are most affected by this and so are a major problem for herbs, greenhouses and nurseries. Place the vinegar in the jar and add the dish soap. Stir the ingredients to combine. Take the lid of the pot and create small holes using a nail and hammer. The holes should be approximately ½ a centimeter in diameter. Most nematode species feed on microbes, while some prefer to eat living matter, such as larvae and grubs, that can damage your lawn. This is what makes them popular in the war against lawn pests. Use these critters in your garden Do not overwater your growing media. Waterlogged growing medium in houseplants is a prime breeding ground for these insects. Don’t allow standing water to remain in saucers below houseplants or near growing media for long. Repair any irrigation system leaks that crop up, and keep your growing medium away from your potted greenhouse dwellers. Pasteurize the compost in your growing medium to eliminate any larvae that may be feeding on the organic materials there. Use commercial growing medium blends that have been treated with heat if you’re not into the idea of doing it yourself. Move any infected plant matter and growing medium away from others while you treat the problem. Biological Removal of Fungus Gnats
