In addition to testing Cinebench without power limits enforced, we’ll also be showing results when the CPU’s power consumption is limited to a more reasonable 200W. We’ll also show results at 125W for those who prefer whisper-quiet cooling, at the cost of some performance. For both of these results, we’ll show traditional delta over ambient temperature results. The DB meter was 30cm from front center of the chassis facing directly towards the front of the chassis, and 19cm high from the desk top. Sound DBA measurements were taken when the motherboard chipset fan was not running.

I obtained the new small low profile IS-55 CPU cooler from ID-Cooling and have tested its cooling performance and compared it against two larger low profile coolers – the Thermalright AXP120-X67 and the Noctua L12 Ghost Edition. Thermalright seems to emphasize cooling performance over noise. The included 15mm fan is a bit louder, but performed at the same cooling level as the 25mm Noctua fan when installed on the AXP120-X67. While it was fairly easy with previous generations of CPUs for coolers to keep the flagship i9 processor well under TJ max (the maximum temperature a CPU can sustain without throttling) in tough workloads, this is no longer realistically possible on current generation CPUs (the 13900K specifically) without extreme cooling (or enabling power limits). Didn't manage to test the performance of this cooler due to compatibility issues with my build and case, but I thought I might share my short experience with the Thermalright AXP120 X67. Thermalright can easily improve this cooler compatibility if they provide a way for users to install the cooler in Up/Down orientation, which you can't on AM4.

Long story short, if you use a left handed A4 sandwich style case with Gigabyte board on AM4 platform, this cooler will be a headache to install. When I began testing coolers on Intel’s Core i9-12900K, I found that some products that cooled the i9-10900K well struggled in some scenarios when paired with the Alder Lake CPU – and Raptor Lake is even more difficult to cool in these situations. While in the past a CPU hitting its peak temperature was cause for concern, enthusiasts are going to have to learn to accept high temperatures as “normal” while running demanding workloads with Raptor Lake and Ryzen 7000 CPUs. The Noctua A12x15 fan was quiet but provided only a very slight cooling improvement over the included fan on the IS-55 and worse performance on the AXP120-X67 cooler.

Thermalright also includes fan clips for standard 120mm fans for those who want to use a stronger, full sized fan, for additional cooling performance. Testing Methodology

The AXP120-X67 is capable of handling the i9-13900K in most scenarios, but it’ll run hot in some workloads.
