There is a lot of violence and it is extremely gory - in fact James Herbert seems to go out of his way with every book to find new ways to shock and disgust you. It features a professional bodyguard and hostage negotiator named Liam Halloran who works for a company named ‘Achilles Shield’. Halloran’s professional nature in the face of so much mystery and (pretty darn obvious) deception is first-rate.

Reading that paragraph, I was ready to forgive everything that had come before and ready to settle in for a creepy as hell ride.Kline's an arrogant and obnoxious fellow who looks "nothing like a genius, and nothing like a wizard" (p. In doing so, from the very outset, Hebert has successfully managed to ramp-up the tension, mystery and increasing excitement. Some Herbert fans favouring his early more graphic horror work may possibly be easily frustrated or feel let down as it does take a long while for the story to get anywhere near to exhibiting any elements of horror, as it opens out a tale of this international company and their highly valuable secret asset, a bizarre Mr. The book's thoughtless using of several troubling horror tropes is disturbing, but its real problem is that it's just not very good.

He relentlessly draws the reader through the story's ultimate revelation - one that will stay to chill the mind long after the book has been laid aside. The majority of the book overtly focuses on the thriller plotline, which is developed through such nonsensical lapses in thought as the chiefs of the boydguarding company being, themselves, completely unguarded. I loved the references to the Sumerians, and I thought all of the storyline's angles made for an interesting premise.Others of Herbert's books, such as Moon, Sepulchre and Portent, are structured as thrillers and include espionage and detective story elements along with the supernatural. Haunted, the story of a sceptical paranormal investigator taunted by malicious ghosts, began life as a screenplay for the BBC, though this was not the screenplay used in the eventual film version.

In Shrine, he explored his Roman Catholic heritage with the story of an apparent miracle which turns out to be something much more sinister. I really wasn't expecting much with this book and was shocked at how good it was; One of the few books I have rated 5stars (along with Stephen Kings DT series). Bodyguard agency Achilles’ Shield supplies ex-soldier Liam Halloran to guard Felix Kline, whose psychic insight is crucial to global mineral corporation Magma.

When he is told to prevent an assassination threat to the enigmatic Felix Kline, a psychic working for mining company Magma, he doesn't know what to expect. First published back in June of 1987, British horror author James Herbert’s novel ‘Sepulchre’ followed on from a healthy line of well-received novels.

But now, with Kliene having a premonition that he is soon to be in very real danger, Magma Corporation are seeking the very best security measures for their prized asset. As you can expect from James Herbert, the story is extremely well written and builds slowly but surely to an absolutely terrifying climax. You feel for the characters and care what happens to everyone, especially the evil ones, as you REALLY get to know what makes them tick and their ends are colourful to the least.

So, we start off with a lot of drama about the firm and the corporation, and then Herbert focuses the story more on Lain and Kline, the client.
